Nutswalnuts refer to the edible seeds produced by trees in the genus Juglans, most commonly the English walnut (Juglans regia). They are encased in a hard shell and a green husk that splits as the fruit ripens. The kernel is wrinkled and pale, with a rich, slightly bitter flavor and a buttery texture when roasted.

Other important species include the black walnut (Juglans nigra), grown in North America, which has a stronger flavor and a darker kernel. Walnuts are cultivated in many temperate regions, with major production centered in the United States, China, Iran, Turkey, and several European countries. They prefer well-drained soils and a climate with a clear winter chill followed by a warm growing season.

Harvest occurs in autumn as the husks split. After collection, walnuts are dried, the husks and shells are removed, and the kernels may be sold fresh or processed into halves, kernels, oil, or meal. Proper storage in a cool, dry place, and refrigerated or frozen storage can extend shelf life and prevent rancidity.

Nutritionally, walnuts are energy-dense and rich in fats, particularly polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, along with protein, fiber, and minerals such as magnesium and phosphorus. They are widely used in baked goods, snacks, salads, and confections, and are valued for their flavor as well as culinary versatility. Walnuts also contribute to crop rotation and agroecosystem diversity, but tree-nut allergies are common and require care.
