Nutriëntfilm, also known as Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), is a hydroponic growing system where plant roots are suspended in a thin film of nutrient-rich water. This shallow stream of water flows continuously over the bare roots of the plants, delivering essential minerals and oxygen. The nutrient solution is typically recirculated from a reservoir, ensuring efficiency and reducing water waste.

In an NFT system, plants are usually placed in channels or gullies, with their roots extending into the nutrient flow. The channels are often slightly sloped to facilitate the movement of the water. As the water flows, it picks up oxygen from the air within the channel and also from the dissolved oxygen in the solution. This constant supply of oxygen is crucial for healthy root development and nutrient uptake.

NFT systems are known for their water efficiency and relatively simple setup. They are suitable for growing a wide variety of plants, particularly leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and herbs. However, it is important to maintain the correct nutrient concentration and pH balance of the solution to prevent nutrient deficiencies or toxicities. The continuous flow also helps to prevent the buildup of pathogens in the reservoir. The shallow depth of the nutrient film is a defining characteristic, distinguishing it from other hydroponic methods that involve deeper water levels.
