Nuottimerkinnöissä refers to a system of musical notation used in Finland and some other Nordic countries. It is a simplified form of traditional Western musical notation, designed to make learning and reading music more accessible, particularly for beginners. The system uses a five-line staff, with the lines representing the notes C, D, E, F, and G. This is in contrast to the standard Western staff, which has five lines representing E, G, B, D, and F.

In nuottimerkinnöissä, notes are placed on the lines or in the spaces between them, and the pitch of the note is determined by its position. For example, a note on the first line from the bottom is a C, while a note in the space between the first and second lines is a D. Accidentals such as sharps and flats are used to alter the pitch of a note, but they are placed to the right of the notehead, unlike in Western notation where they are placed to the left.

The system also uses a unique time signature, with the top number representing the number of beats in a measure and the bottom number representing the type of note that gets one beat. For example, 3/4 time would mean three beats per measure, with a quarter note getting one beat.

Nuottimerkinnöissä is widely used in Finnish schools for music education, as well as in some community music programs. It is also used in some Finnish folk music traditions. However, it is not as widely used outside of Finland and the Nordic countries, and many musicians who learn nuottimerkinnöissä also learn Western notation to facilitate communication with other musicians.
