A nuclear-weapon-free zone (NWFZ) is a defined geographical area in which the possession, manufacture, deployment, and testing of nuclear weapons are prohibited by treaty. The establishment of NWFZs is a key component of international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and to promote nuclear disarmament. These zones are created through multilateral treaties negotiated and signed by the states within the zone.

The first NWFZ was established in Latin America and the Caribbean through the Treaty of Tlatelolco, signed in 1967. Since then, other NWFZs have been established in the South Pacific (Treaty of Rarotonga, 1985), Southeast Asia (Treaty of Bangkok, 1995), Africa (Pelindaba Treaty, 1996), and Central Asia (Semipalatinsk Treaty, 2006). In each case, the treaties outline specific obligations for the participating states and often include protocols for external nuclear-weapon states to adhere to, such as not using or threatening to use nuclear weapons against states in the zone.

The effectiveness of NWFZs relies on several factors, including the commitment of the participating states to uphold the treaty provisions, the adherence of nuclear-weapon states to the protocols, and robust verification mechanisms. While NWFZs do not eliminate the global threat of nuclear weapons, they contribute to regional security, build confidence among neighboring countries, and strengthen the international non-proliferation regime. They serve as practical steps towards a world free of nuclear weapons by limiting their geographical spread.
