Nounuse is a term encountered in some linguistic discussions to refer to the study or description of noun usage in language data. There is no single, universally accepted definition, so interpretations of nounuse vary by author and context. Broadly, it is used to denote either the set of nouns and their syntactic behavior in a language, or a discourse- or corpus-centered focus on how nouns function within texts.

In syntactic or grammatical analyses, nounuse can describe how nouns participate in clause structure, including their roles as subjects, objects, or within noun phrases, as well as features such as count versus mass nouns, plurality, and determiner interactions. In corpus linguistics and discourse analysis, nounuse often refers to the study of noun frequency, distribution across genres, and their function as referents or anchors in discourse. Researchers may use parts-of-speech tagging, frequency counts, and collocation or thematic analysis to quantify noun usage and its relationship to information structure, cohesion, and topic management. Nominalization and the use of deverbal or event nouns may also be explored under nounuse as phenomena that expand nominal density in text.
