normosmic

Normosmic is an adjective used to describe a person with a normal sense of smell. In clinical and research contexts, it is related to normosmia, the state of typical olfactory function, in contrast to anosmia (complete loss) and hyposmia (reduced function).

Assessment: Olfactory capability is evaluated with standardized tests, such as Sniffin' Sticks, UPSIT, or other olfactometry methods. These tests assess different aspects, including odor detection threshold, discrimination between odors, and odor identification. Results that fall within established age- and sex-matched normative ranges are described as normosmia. Scores below these ranges indicate hyposmia or anosmia, while results above are rarely used.

Variability: Olfactory function tends to decline with age, and normative data are stratified accordingly. Factors such as upper respiratory infections, head trauma, smoking, or nasal disease can affect results, but when a person's performance is consistent with norms, they are considered normosmic.

Clinical relevance: Determination of normosmia helps clinicians distinguish normal olfactory function from smell disorders and guides management. However, some individuals may experience qualitative olfactory disturbances, such as parosmia or phantosmia, even if they are normosmic on quantitative testing.
