Nonautosomal refers to genetic material or inheritance patterns that are not located on autosomal chromosomes. Autosomal chromosomes are the numbered chromosomes (1 through 22 in humans) that are the same in both males and females. Nonautosomal inheritance, therefore, involves genes located on sex chromosomes or on mitochondrial DNA.

Sex-linked inheritance, a type of nonautosomal inheritance, is determined by genes on the X or Y chromosomes. In humans, the X chromosome is larger and carries more genes than the Y chromosome, which is primarily responsible for male development. Traits inherited through sex-linked genes often exhibit different patterns of expression between males and females due to the presence of two X chromosomes in females and one X and one Y chromosome in males. Examples include color blindness and hemophilia, which are more common in males because they only have one X chromosome.

Mitochondrial inheritance is another form of nonautosomal inheritance. Mitochondria are organelles within cells that have their own small, circular DNA molecule. This mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is typically inherited solely from the mother. Therefore, traits or conditions caused by mutations in mtDNA are passed down from mother to all of her offspring, regardless of sex. This is distinct from autosomal inheritance, where offspring inherit genetic material equally from both parents.
