These devices are crucial for preventing overfilling, underfilling, or dry running of equipment such as tanks, pumps, and boilers.

The principle of operation for a nivåvakt varies depending on the type of technology employed. Common sensing methods include float switches, conductivity probes, capacitance sensors, and ultrasonic detectors. A float switch, for instance, utilizes a buoyant element that rises and falls with the fluid level, activating a switch at predetermined points. Conductivity probes rely on the electrical conductivity of the fluid to detect its presence or absence between electrodes. Capacitance sensors measure changes in capacitance caused by the dielectric properties of the fluid. Ultrasonic nivåvakter emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for them to return after reflecting off the fluid surface.
