A nivåbryter, or level switch in English, is a device used to detect the level of a substance, most commonly a liquid or granular solid, within a container. They are crucial components in many industrial and domestic applications for process control, safety, and automation. Nivåbrytare work by indicating whether a material has reached a specific high or low point, triggering an alarm or a control action such as shutting off a pump or opening a valve.

There are various types of nivåbrytare, each utilizing different physical principles. Float-type switches are perhaps the simplest, employing a buoyant element that rises or falls with the liquid level, mechanically activating a switch. Conductivity switches operate based on the electrical conductivity of the substance; when the substance bridges a gap between two electrodes, a circuit is completed. Vibrating fork or tuning fork switches use the principle of resonance; when submerged in a fluid, the vibration is dampened, signaling a change in level. Other common types include capacitive, ultrasonic, and optical level switches, each suited for different media and operating conditions.

The choice of nivåbryter depends on factors such as the type of substance being monitored, its temperature and pressure, the required accuracy, and environmental considerations. They are essential for preventing overflows, ensuring minimum fill levels, and maintaining optimal operating conditions in a wide range of equipment.
