Nitrogenrikt is a Swedish term that translates to “nitrogen-rich.” It describes substances or materials that contain high amounts of nitrogen, a key element for plant growth, protein synthesis, and numerous biological processes. The term is used in fields such as agriculture, soil science, composting, and nutrition.

In soils and agriculture, nitrogen-rich amendments provide plant-available nitrogen, primarily as nitrate and ammonium. Common sources include manure, high-nitrogen compost, blood meal, fish meal, urea, and ammonium sulfate. The effectiveness of these inputs depends on timing, soil conditions, and balance with carbon and other nutrients. Excessive application can lead to leaf burn, volatilization of ammonia, and nitrogen leaching into waterways, while too little delays growth. The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio influences how quickly nitrogen is mineralized from organic matter, affecting release rates to plants.

In composting, nitrogen-rich materials (greens) support microbial activity and faster decomposition when balanced with carbon-rich materials (browns). A general guideline is a C:N ratio around 25–30:1, though finished compost will have a lower ratio. Too much nitrogen can cause odor issues and imbalanced compost quality if not paired with sufficient carbon.

In nutrition, nitrogen content is a proxy for protein, since proteins contain nitrogen. The Kjeldahl or Dumas methods estimate protein by measuring nitrogen and applying a conversion factor. Nitrogen-rich foods include meat, dairy, eggs, and legumes. Excess dietary nitrogen, particularly from certain additives, may have health implications in sensitive individuals.

Environmentally, surplus soil nitrogen can leach into groundwater or fuel coastal eutrophication. Responsible management includes precise fertilizer applications, use of slow-release forms, cover crops, and practices that minimize nitrogen losses.
