Nitriles are organic compounds that contain a cyano functional group, which consists of a carbon atom triple-bonded to a nitrogen atom. The general formula for a nitrile is R-C≡N, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group. The cyano group is polar due to the electronegativity difference between carbon and nitrogen, making nitriles soluble in polar solvents.

Nitriles can be synthesized through various methods. One common method is the dehydration of amides, where a dehydrating agent like phosphorus pentoxide is used. Hydrolysis of nitriles in acidic or basic conditions yields carboxylic acids or their salts. Reduction of nitriles can produce primary amines. Furthermore, nitriles can react with Grignard reagents to form ketones after hydrolysis.

Nitriles have diverse applications in industry and research. They are important intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and polymers. For example, acrylonitrile, a simple nitrile, is a key monomer in the production of acrylic fibers and ABS plastic. Acetonitrile, another common nitrile, is widely used as a solvent in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and as a reagent in organic synthesis.
