Nisbaforming, or forming nisba, is a derivational process in Arabic grammar used to create adjectives that express relation, origin, or affiliation to a noun, often a place, ethnonym, tribe, profession, or organization. The resulting nisba adjective typically accompanies a noun to indicate “from,” “belonging to,” or “associated with” the base term. In standard Arabic, the most common masculine singular nisba ending is -ī, with the feminine singular ending -iyya; plural forms adjust for gender and number as required.
