nimekõrgus

Nimekõrgus is a concept in Estonian, referring to the highest altitude above sea level of a named peak. In other words, it is the highest point of an individual hill or mountain that has a name assigned to it. This concept is distinct from the overall highest peak in an area, which may not have a unique name.

In Estonia, the highest nimekõrgus above sea level is the summit of Suur Munamägi hill, which towers at 318.1 meters. This is an example of a named peak, where its nimekõrgus translates to 318.1 meters above sea level. Other features such as likeness in form or difference in height may not qualify as separately named peaks.

Elevation, or height, helps distinguish between named peaks. In areas where only one named peak exists, a mid-slope break may not be enough to declare two hills with separate names. However, multiple high levels on one face, making two peaks so, might amount to different named peaks because of side ranges.

Calculating and keeping track of the elevations can present some difficulties, especially on aerial representations. It is interesting, though, as well as contesting for tallest ridges, which each individual record a part. Nimekõrgus can play a significant role in geography and topography, often raising interesting points on the nature of geographical features.
