Nimbostratus is a mid-level cloud characterized by its dark gray, often shapeless appearance. It is known for producing continuous, widespread precipitation, which can be in the form of rain, snow, or ice pellets. Unlike cumulonimbus clouds, nimbostratus does not typically produce thunderstorms or hail. The base of nimbostratus clouds is usually diffuse and ragged, and the cloud layer can extend from the surface up to around 20,000 feet.

The name "nimbostratus" comes from the Latin words "nimbus," meaning rain cloud, and "stratus," meaning layer. This accurately describes its appearance and its primary weather association. These clouds are often associated with warm fronts or occluded fronts, where warm, moist air is forced to rise over cooler air. The slow, steady ascent of air allows for the formation of a thick, extensive cloud layer that yields prolonged precipitation.

The precipitation from nimbostratus is generally light to moderate in intensity but can last for many hours, or even days. This can lead to significant accumulations of rain or snow, causing flooding or hazardous travel conditions.
