Nietmonitored is an informal term used in IT and cybersecurity to describe assets, processes, or environments that lack ongoing monitoring, logging, or alerting, as part of a monitoring strategy. The term highlights blind spots in visibility and is not tied to a single standard definition.

In practice, nietmonitored assets appear in risk assessments and audits when inventories miss devices or services, including legacy systems, unmanaged cloud resources, IoT devices, and development or test environments. The label is used to flag items that require telemetry, inventory, or governance to improve security and reliability.

The primary risk is undetected incidents: attackers may operate without alerts, compliance controls may be violated, and change or configuration drift can go unnoticed. Nietmonitored environments also complicate incident response and forensic analysis.

Mitigation involves establishing or expanding monitoring coverage: create an up-to-date asset inventory, enforce monitoring policies, deploy appropriate agents or exporters, integrate telemetry with SIEM or observability platforms, and assign owners and remediation timelines.

Origin and usage: The term is informal and largely lexical within industry discussions rather than a formal standard. Variants include not-monitored or non-monitored, and cross-language usage should consider that "niet" means not in Dutch.
