Nickel laterite is a type of nickel ore deposit formed through the weathering and leaching of ultramafic and mafic rocks, such as peridotite and basalt, under tropical or subtropical conditions. These deposits are characterized by their lateritic profile, which consists of three distinct layers: the saprolite zone at the top, followed by the limonite zone, and finally the garnet zone at the bottom. The saprolite zone is rich in nickel-bearing minerals like garnierite, while the limonite zone contains iron oxides and nickel hydroxides.

Nickel laterites are significant global sources of nickel, accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s nickel production. They are particularly important due to their high nickel content, often exceeding 1% by weight, and their association with other valuable metals such as cobalt, copper, and platinum group elements. Unlike sulfide deposits, which are the primary source of nickel in some regions, laterites are typically found in near-surface environments, making them easier to mine through open-pit methods.

The formation of nickel laterites begins with the alteration of ultramafic rocks by tropical weathering processes, which involve the dissolution of primary minerals and the precipitation of secondary nickel-bearing phases. Over time, nickel migrates downward through the profile, leading to the enrichment of nickel in the saprolite and limonite zones. The process can take millions of years, depending on climatic conditions.

Nickel laterites are processed through various methods, including high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) and pressure oxidation, to extract nickel and cobalt from the ore. These processes are energy-intensive but are essential for recovering metals from low-grade lateritic deposits. Due to their environmental impact, mining and processing operations are subject to strict regulations to minimize pollution and habitat disruption.

The global demand for nickel, driven by industries such as stainless steel production and battery manufacturing, continues to support the exploration and development of nickel laterite deposits. Major producing countries include Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, and Brazil, where large-scale mining operations contribute significantly to the global nickel supply.
