This extreme neutronization is a consequence of the immense gravitational forces present in such dense environments.

Under normal conditions, atomic nuclei are composed of both protons and neutrons, with the number of protons defining the element. However, in the core of a neutron star, the pressure is so intense that it overcomes the electrostatic repulsion between protons. This leads to a process called inverse beta decay, where protons and electrons combine to form neutrons and neutrinos. The neutrinos escape, leaving behind a matter composed almost entirely of neutrons.

While neutron stars are the most prominent example of neutron-rich matter, the concept of neutronheavy could also be applied to other hypothetical or exotic states of matter found in extreme astrophysical conditions, such as the interiors of more massive neutron stars or during certain supernova events.
