Neuropáthiás, often referred to as neuropathy, is a general term for damage to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system consists of all the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord, which transmit information between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. This damage can disrupt sensation, movement, and organ function.

There are many causes of neuropáthiás, including diabetes mellitus, which is the most common cause, trauma, infections, autoimmune diseases, vitamin deficiencies, and exposure to toxins. The specific symptoms depend on which nerves are affected. Sensory nerves, when damaged, can lead to pain, tingling, numbness, or a loss of sensation. Motor nerves, if affected, can cause muscle weakness, cramps, or paralysis. Autonomic nerves, which control involuntary bodily functions, when damaged, can result in problems with digestion, blood pressure regulation, heart rate, and bladder control.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical and neurological examination, and often nerve conduction studies and electromyography (NEMG) to assess nerve and muscle function. Blood tests may also be performed to identify underlying causes. Treatment strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause of the neuropathy, managing symptoms, and preventing further damage. This can include medications for pain, physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and specific treatments for conditions like diabetes.
