Nettverksmodemer, commonly referred to as modemer, are essential hardware devices that facilitate communication between a home or office network and the wider internet. The term "modem" is a portmanteau of modulator-demodulator, which accurately describes its primary function. Modems take digital signals from a computer or network and convert them into analog signals that can be transmitted over telephone lines, cable lines, or fiber optic cables. Conversely, they receive analog signals from the network and convert them back into digital signals that the computer or network can understand.

There are several types of modems, distinguished by the transmission medium they use. Dial-up modems, once prevalent, utilized standard telephone lines but offered very slow connection speeds. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modems, also using telephone lines, provide significantly faster speeds by employing a wider range of frequencies. Cable modems transmit data over the same coaxial cable network used for cable television, offering high-speed internet access. Fiber optic modems, or ONTs (Optical Network Terminals), are the latest technology, converting light signals into electrical signals for incredibly fast and reliable internet connections.

Modems are typically provided by internet service providers (ISPs) and are often a mandatory component for accessing their services. While some routers incorporate modem functionality, many users opt for separate modems and routers to enjoy greater flexibility and control over their home networks. The modem acts as the gateway to the internet, while the router distributes that connection to multiple devices within the local network.
