netipot

A netipot is a small, teapot-like device used to perform nasal irrigation by flushing the nasal passages with saline solution. It originated in the Ayurvedic practice of Jala Neti and has been incorporated into modern ENT care as a supplementary method for relief of rhinitis and sinusitis. Neti pots are typically made of ceramic, plastic, or stainless steel and feature a narrow spout designed to fit into a nostril.

In use, a saline solution is poured into the pot and the user tilts the head sideways over a sink, allowing the liquid to flow through one nostril and out the other. The process can be repeated on the opposite side. Solutions are usually isotonic or mildly hypotonic and can be pre-mixed or prepared at home. Water used for rinsing should be sterile, distilled, or boiled and cooled to reduce the risk of infection from waterborne organisms.

Safety and hygiene are central to netipot use. After rinsing, the pot should be thoroughly cleaned and air-dried; it should not be shared between users and should be replaced if damaged. A key safety guideline is to never use untreated tap water for nasal irrigation, as this can introduce dangerous microbes. Individuals with recent nasal surgery, nasal obstruction, ear infection, or other significant nasal issues should consult a clinician before use.

Efficacy and notes: Clinical evidence suggests modest benefits for chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis as an adjunct to medical management, rather than a cure. Neti irrigation is generally considered a supplementary therapy and is not a substitute for professional treatment when serious symptoms or infections are present.
