Nesepassasje refers to the nasal passage, the airway within the nose that extends from the nostrils to the pharynx. It is a crucial component of the respiratory system, responsible for warming, humidifying, and filtering inhaled air before it reaches the lungs. The nasal passages are lined with mucous membranes that secrete mucus, which traps dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Tiny hairs called cilia then propel this mucus towards the throat, where it can be swallowed or coughed out.

Within the nasal passage are structures known as turbinates, which are bony projections covered in mucous membrane. These turbinates increase the surface area of the nasal cavity, allowing for more efficient contact between inhaled air and the lining of the nose. This increased surface area further enhances the warming and humidifying capabilities of the nasal passage. The olfactory epithelium, responsible for the sense of smell, is also located in the upper part of the nasal cavity.

Blockage or inflammation of the nasal passage, often referred to as nasal congestion, can be caused by various factors including allergies, infections (like the common cold or flu), and structural abnormalities. This congestion can lead to difficulty breathing through the nose, reduced sense of smell, and discomfort.
