nerviós

Nerviós is a nonstandard or fictional term sometimes used to describe a state of heightened nervous-system arousal and emotional instability. It is not an officially recognized medical diagnosis and does not appear in major psychiatric classification systems such as the DSM-5 or ICD-11.

The form appears to reflect Romance-language patterns, drawing on the root nerv- from Latin nervus meaning "nerve" and the adjectival suffix -iós found in Catalan and related languages. In standard Catalan, nerviós means nervous or jittery; nerviós outside of established dictionaries may occur in creative writing, regional speech, or fictional works.

Descriptively, a nerviós state would be associated with autonomic arousal (such as increased heart rate and sweating), irritability, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. Because it is not an established clinical category, there are no formal diagnostic criteria, standard treatments, or precise etiologies defined for nerviós. In real-world terms, symptoms of nervousness overlap with anxiety, stress reactions, and other conditions; persistent or impairing symptoms should be evaluated by a health professional.

In literature, media, or cultural discourse, nerviós can function as a narrative or stylistic device to convey a character’s temperament, cultural flavor, or fictional diagnostic framework within a speculative setting. When encountered outside fiction, it is important to distinguish colloquial or literary usage from medical terminology.
