Nerfrichting is a term used in Dutch neuroanatomy and neuroimaging to describe the orientation and preferred direction of nerve fibers or nerve signal flow within a region of nervous tissue. The concept covers both large-scale tract directions between brain regions and micro-scale orientation of individual axons. In English-language literature the same idea is typically referred to as nerve fiber orientation or directional anisotropy.

In practice, nerfrichting is determined through a combination of histological and imaging methods. Histology with neurofilament or myelin labeling can reveal the local arrangement of fibers, while imaging techniques such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) infer the dominant directions of white matter tracts in living people. Other approaches include polarized light imaging and optical clearing coupled with microscopy to map fiber directions at higher resolution. Accurate assessment of nerfrichting supports studies of brain connectivity, development, and plasticity, and it informs clinical tasks such as planning neurosurgical trajectories or guiding nerve repair and grafting.

Applications of the concept include understanding how nerve fibers organize during maturation, how they reorient after injury, and how aligned grafts or implants can improve functional recovery.
