neocorticali

Neocorticali is not a widely recognized term in contemporary neuroscience. In most English-language sources, the standard term is neocortex or neocortical, while neocorticali may appear as a Latinized or pluralizing form in non-English or historic texts. As such, neocorticali does not designate a distinct anatomical structure on its own.

Neocortex refers to the dorsal pallial portion of the cerebral cortex in mammals, characterized by a six-layered structure and high degree of regional specialization. It underlies higher cognitive functions such as sensory perception, voluntary movement planning, language, and abstract reasoning. The neocortex is organized into functional areas that process sensory information and integrate it with memory and executive processes.

During development, the neocortex arises from the dorsal telencephalon and undergoes extensive neuronal migration and lamination. Across mammals, its size and complexity vary, with primates showing pronounced expansion that correlates with advanced cognition. Evolutionary expansion of the neocortex is a hallmark of mammalian brain diversification.

Neocortical dysfunction is implicated in a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including epilepsy, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, and stroke. Lesions in specific neocortical areas can produce deficits in perception, language, or motor control.
