Negotiative is an adjective describing something pertaining to negotiation or intended to facilitate the negotiating process. It is relatively uncommon in everyday English and is more likely to appear in formal or technical writing within business, legal, or diplomatic contexts. The term should not be confused with negotiable, which describes goods, terms, or instruments that can be altered or agreed upon through negotiation; negotiative emphasizes the act or process of negotiating itself.

In practical use, negotiative terms or clauses refer to provisions that are designed to be discussed and mutually agreed. For example, a contract might include negotiative clauses that authorize price adjustments or deadlines only after a bilateral agreement. A negotiative approach or posture describes a strategy oriented toward reaching compromise, identifying concessions, and balancing competing interests rather than imposing terms unilaterally.

In diplomacy and international relations, negotiative processes are central to treaty formation, dispute resolution, and alliance-building. The term may appear in policy analyses to describe pathways that keep lines of negotiation open and explore acceptable compromises.

In linguistics, negotiative is rarely used as a technical term; researchers more commonly discuss negotiation in discourse or negotiation strategies within conversations. The notion of a dedicated “negotiative mood” is not widely recognized as a standard grammatical category.
