The most frequent cause is bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally reside in the digestive tract. These bacteria can enter the urinary tract and travel upwards.

Symptoms of a kidney infection can vary but often include fever, chills, and pain in the back or side, usually on one side. Other signs may involve painful or frequent urination, a burning sensation during urination, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. Nausea and vomiting can also occur. In some cases, particularly in older adults or young children, symptoms might be less specific, such as fatigue or confusion.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, urine tests to detect bacteria and white blood cells, and sometimes blood tests to check for signs of infection. Imaging tests like ultrasounds or CT scans may be used to assess the kidneys and rule out blockages.

Treatment for kidney infections typically involves a course of antibiotics, often administered intravenously in more severe cases or in a hospital setting. Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent the infection from spreading to the bloodstream, which can lead to a life-threatening condition called sepsis. Following the full course of antibiotics is essential to ensure the infection is completely cleared. Dehydration can increase the risk of urinary tract infections, so staying well-hydrated is generally recommended.
