Neardystopian is a term used to describe a subgenre of speculative fiction that depicts a future or alternative present that is not overtly catastrophic but is deeply flawed, oppressive, or unsustainable. Unlike traditional dystopian fiction, which often features totalitarian regimes, widespread societal collapse, or extreme environmental devastation, neardystopian scenarios present a more subtle, insidious form of societal decline. These worlds may appear outwardly normal or even prosperous, but beneath the surface, fundamental issues of control, inequality, environmental degradation, or loss of humanity are eroding the foundations of society.
