Navigaatioista refers to the Finnish term for navigation. In its broadest sense, it encompasses the process of determining one's position and planning and following a course. This can be applied to various contexts, from the simple act of finding one's way through a familiar neighborhood to complex voyages across oceans or the planning of space missions.

Historically, navigation relied heavily on celestial bodies, such as the sun and stars, as well as natural landmarks. The development of tools like the compass, astrolabe, and sextant revolutionized seafaring and exploration, allowing for more accurate determination of latitude and longitude.

In modern times, electronic navigation systems have become dominant. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), provide precise positioning information anywhere on Earth. These systems utilize a network of satellites that transmit signals, which receivers on the ground can interpret to calculate their location.

Beyond GNSS, other electronic aids include radar, which detects objects and terrain, and inertial navigation systems, which track movement and orientation without external references. These technologies are crucial not only for maritime and aviation but also for land-based transportation, surveying, and even personal use through smartphone applications. The principles of navigation, however, remain constant: understanding one's position, knowing the desired destination, and devising a safe and efficient route to get there.
