Nattkikare is the Swedish term for night-vision equipment used to see in low-light conditions. The term covers a range of devices, including handheld monoculars and goggles, as well as rifle sights and cameras designed for nighttime use. In Sweden and other Nordic countries, nattkikare are used in civilian, hunting, security, and military contexts to improve visibility after dark.

The most common nattkikare rely on image intensification (IIT) tubes that amplify available light. Ambient photons are converted to electrons and amplified through a photocathode and microchannel plate, then re-illuminated on a phosphor screen to produce a visible image. Generations (Gen 1 through Gen 3) differ in sensitivity, resolution, and durability. A parallel class uses thermal imaging, which detects infrared radiation emitted by objects as heat and creates images without relying on ambient light. Some devices combine IIT with active infrared illumination, enabling use in near-total darkness.

Uses and formats vary widely. They are employed for military and police surveillance, search and rescue, wildlife and nocturnal observation, and hunting. Consumer models range from compact handheld monoculars to helmet-mounted goggles and rifle scopes. While nattkikare provide enhanced perception in darkness, image quality, depth perception, and color rendering may be limited compared with daytime viewing.

Regulatory and safety considerations also apply. Regulations on ownership and use vary by country, and some high-performance devices may be restricted or require permits. Operational considerations include susceptibility to bright light, weather conditions, and the need for proper handling to avoid damage to sensitive components.
