Natchnienie is a Polish noun meaning a sudden inner impulse or a divine influence that guides a person’s thoughts, actions, or creative work. It denotes inspiration felt as something external or transcendent rather than the product of deliberate reasoning. The term comes from the verb natchnąć (to prompt or inspire) and the suffix -enie, forming the state or act of being prompted.

Historically, natchnienie carries strong religious connotations in Polish Catholic and Protestant contexts, where it is described as a grace or divine suggestion granted by God. In secular usage, it can refer to a sudden burst of creativity or insight attributed to subconscious processes, intuition, or luck, sometimes framed as a spontaneous idea that appears to come from nowhere.

In literature and criticism, natchnienie is used to describe moments when a writer or poet feels seized by inspiration, whether labeled as natchnienie boże (divine inspiration) or simply natchnienie as a creative surge.
