Nanotubusemitterit are devices that use carbon nanotubes to emit electrons when subjected to an electric field. The phenomenon is exploited to create compact, robust electron sources for vacuum electronics and related technologies. CNT emitters include single nanotubes and densely packed arrays grown directly on substrates or assembled onto electrode structures.

Principle and structure: Carbon nanotubes have high aspect ratios, excellent electrical conductivity, and small tip radii, which produce large local field enhancement at the tube apex. Electron emission occurs primarily via Fowler–Nordheim tunneling from the CNT tip under applied voltage. Arrays can deliver high current densities with relatively uniform emission by controlling CNT density, alignment, and surface cleanliness. CNTs can be grown by chemical vapor deposition on conductive substrates or transferred onto electrodes; additional gating or focusing elements can shape the emitted beam.

Performance and stability: Turn-on electric fields are typically in the range of a few tenths to a few volts per micron, depending on nanotube quality, density, and substrate preparation. Emission can be rapid and have low energy spread, but long-term stability is sensitive to surface contamination, adsorbates, and ion bombardment. Mechanical and chemical robustness of CNTs contributes to durability, though tip burnout and degradation can occur under high current densities.

Applications: CNT emitters have been explored as cold cathodes for field emission displays, compact electron sources for scanning electron microscopes and X-ray tubes, and other vacuum microelectronic devices. While engineered CNT emitters have demonstrated functional prototypes and niche deployments, widespread commercialization remains limited by fabrication uniformity, reliability, and integration challenges.
