Nalès is an ancient city located in the Draa-Tafilalet region of Morocco. It is situated approximately 70 kilometers east of the city of Ouarzazate, near the border with Algeria.

The site of Nalès has been occupied since the Neolithic period, with evidence of habitation dating back to around 3000 BCE. The city itself was likely founded in the 6th century BCE, during the Masmuda period of Moroccan history. Nalès was a significant trading center in the ancient world, known for its control of the trans-Saharan trade routes between Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa.

The city's decline began in the 11th century CE, following the Almoravid dynasty's conquests in the region. Many of the city's buildings and artifacts were likely pillaged or destroyed as a result of these conflicts. By the 16th century CE, Nalès had largely fallen into disrepair.

Today, the site of Nalès is a tourist attraction and a popular destination for archaeologists and historians. Excavations have revealed a number of artifacts and structures, including the remains of a ancient mosque, a few dozen buildings and a palace. The site is considered a significant cultural and historical treasure of Morocco and North Africa, with experts expecting important discoveries still to be made.

Due to the remote and protected location of Nalès, the site has been preserved in relatively good condition, providing insights into the social, cultural and economic lives of the ancient inhabitants of North Africa. The ongoing archaeological work at the site continues to shed new light on the history of Nalès and the broader history of Morocco.
