nagyolvasztóban

"Nagyolvasztóban" is a Hungarian term that translates to "in the blast furnace." It refers to the industrial process of smelting iron ore, where iron is separated from its oxide using a blast furnace. This process involves heating iron ore, coke, and limestone to very high temperatures. The coke acts as a fuel and a reducing agent, while the limestone acts as a flux.

The blast furnace is a tall, chimney-like structure. Air is blown in through openings near the bottom, causing the coke to burn intensely and reach temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees Celsius. This heat melts the iron ore. The limestone decomposes and reacts with impurities in the ore, such as silica, to form a molten slag. This slag, being lighter than molten iron, floats on top and can be drained off separately. The molten iron collects at the bottom of the furnace and is periodically tapped off.

This raw iron, known as pig iron, is high in carbon content and brittle. It is often further refined into cast iron or steel, which have much wider industrial applications. The blast furnace method has been the primary way of producing iron for centuries and remains a cornerstone of modern heavy industry, essential for manufacturing steel, which is used in construction, vehicles, and countless other products.
