nSMase2
Neutral sphingomyelinase 2, often abbreviated as nSMase2, is an enzyme encoded by the SMase2 gene in humans. It belongs to the neutral sphingomyelinase family of enzymes, which are responsible for the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin. Sphingomyelin is a type of sphingolipid found in the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells. The hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by nSMase2 yields ceramide and phosphorylcholine.
Ceramide is a crucial lipid second messenger involved in a wide array of cellular processes, including cell
