Närvijuhatus, also known as nerve conduction, refers to the process by which electrical signals or impulses are transmitted along nerve fibers. This transmission is crucial for communication within the nervous system, allowing for rapid transmission of information between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body. The fundamental unit of this process is the neuron, a specialized cell that conducts these electrical impulses.

The transmission of a nerve impulse begins with a stimulus that causes a change in the electrical potential across the neuron's membrane. This change, known as depolarization, triggers a cascade of events that propagate the electrical signal down the axon, the long projection of the neuron. This propagation occurs through the movement of ions, such as sodium and potassium, across the neuronal membrane. The speed of conduction can vary significantly depending on factors like the diameter of the axon and the presence of myelin, a fatty insulating sheath that wraps around many axons. Myelinated axons conduct impulses much faster through a process called saltatory conduction, where the impulse "jumps" between gaps in the myelin sheath.

Conditions like peripheral neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, and carpal tunnel syndrome are characterized by impaired nerve signal transmission, resulting in symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain.
