It covers the terms used to identify pattern pieces, their shapes, and how they are assembled, as well as the markings printed on pattern sheets.

Pattern pieces are labeled with terms such as grain line, center front, cut on fold, and notches. Markings indicate seam lines, fold lines, and cutting lines, while symbols denote allowances, darts, gathers, and pleats. The terminology helps designers and sewers communicate precisely how a pattern should be laid out and constructed.

Construction terms describe how pieces join: seam allowance, seam, hem, facing, lining, and interfacing. Additional terms cover closures and finishing details, including zipper placement, plackets, buttons, buttonholes, and cuffs. These terms guide the actual sewing and assembly of the garment.

Shaping and fit terms describe garment shaping: darts, tucks, pleats, gathers, and eased seams, as well as style lines and the concept of ease for comfort. They explain how patterns create the intended fit and silhouette.

Layout and sizing terms address how patterns are laid out on fabric, including cutting on the fold, nesting for multi-size patterns, and size grading from one size to another. This area also covers how patterns accommodate different body measurements and proportions.
