místopis

Místopis is a term used in geography and related disciplines to describe the characteristics of a particular place or region. It consolidates natural and human aspects to present a concise, coherent picture of what a location is like, how its landscape and environment function, and how it has developed. Typical elements include natural conditions (relief, climate, hydrology, soils, flora and fauna) as well as the built environment (settlements, land use, infrastructure, economy, demography, culture, monuments and administrative boundaries).

Etymology and usage: The word derives from místo (place) and opis (description). Historically in Czech, místopis referred to descriptive accounts of places in travel writings, gazetteers and encyclopedic works. In modern usage it covers systematic regional or municipal descriptions, as well as occasional historical place descriptions.

Methods and sources: Místopis relies on field surveys, maps and aerial or satellite imagery, archival documents, census data and cadastral records, toponymic studies and, increasingly, geographic information systems (GIS). Output can take the form of monographs, municipal profiles, gazetteers, or sections within regional studies and heritage documentation.

Relation to other disciplines: It overlaps with topography, geography and toponymy. While topography maps surface features, místopis provides an integrated description of natural and social properties of a place.
