Mélyszántás, often translated as deep plowing or deep tillage, is an agricultural practice involving the inversion and mixing of soil to a greater depth than conventional plowing. This technique typically targets depths of 30 centimeters or more, significantly deeper than standard plowing which usually operates within the top 15-20 centimeters of the soil profile. The primary objectives of mélyszántás are to break up compacted soil layers, improve aeration and water infiltration, and incorporate surface residues and organic matter into deeper soil horizons.

The practice is particularly useful in areas experiencing hardpan formation, which is a dense, impermeable layer of soil that restricts root growth and water movement. By shattering this compacted layer, mélyszántás can enhance drainage, reduce waterlogging, and allow plant roots to access nutrients and moisture in deeper soil zones. This can lead to improved crop yields, especially in drought-prone regions or on soils with poor drainage characteristics. Furthermore, the incorporation of crop residues and organic matter at greater depths can contribute to the long-term improvement of soil structure and fertility.

However, mélyszántás is an energy-intensive operation requiring specialized, heavy-duty plows and powerful tractors. It can also lead to increased soil erosion if not managed carefully, especially on sloped land or in windy conditions. The disruption of soil structure and the potential disturbance of beneficial soil organisms are also considerations. Therefore, the decision to employ mélyszántás is usually based on specific soil conditions, crop requirements, and an assessment of its potential benefits versus its environmental and economic costs.
