Mätserie, in English often called a measurement series, refers to a structured collection of measurements of the same quantity obtained under defined conditions. The primary goal is to quantify the value of the quantity, characterize variation due to measurement processes, and enable estimation of measurement uncertainty. A mätserie is typically time-ordered and performed with the same instrument and procedure to ensure comparability.

Planning and execution: Define the quantity to measure, the measurement method, the instrument, the units, and the sampling interval. Ensure traceability to standards through calibration and documentation of environmental conditions. Record each observation with a timestamp and any relevant settings.

Analysis: Common statistics include the sample mean as an estimate of the true value and the standard deviation as a measure of repeatability. Confidence intervals express uncertainty. Control charts may monitor stability over time. It is important to distinguish random (statistical) uncertainty from systematic bias, which may require instrument calibration or method revision. Outlier handling and data quality checks are part of the process.

Applications and examples: Measurement series are used in quality control, metrology, experimental physics, and environmental monitoring. Example: weighing a standard mass five times on the same balance to determine its value and precision, or recording ambient temperature every minute for an hour to assess stability.
