märkäpuvut

Märkäpuvut, often translated as wetsuits, are garments typically made of neoprene that are worn by surfers, divers, kayakers, and other water sports enthusiasts. Their primary function is to provide thermal insulation, warmth, and protection in water.

The term "märkäpuku" refers to how the suit works. When submerged, a thin layer of water seeps between the suit and the wearer's skin. This water is then warmed by body heat, creating an insulating barrier that significantly reduces heat loss. The neoprene material itself has trapped gas bubbles, which also contribute to its insulating properties.

Märkäpuvut come in various thicknesses, ranging from 1mm to 7mm or even thicker for extreme cold water conditions. The thickness chosen depends on the water temperature and the individual's tolerance to cold. They also come in different styles, including full suits that cover the entire body, shorty suits that cover the torso and upper legs, and various combinations for specific activities and water temperatures.

Beyond insulation, märkäpuvut offer protection from abrasions, minor cuts, and stings from marine life. They also provide buoyancy, which can be beneficial in certain water sports. The fit of a märkäpuku is crucial; it should be snug but not restrictive, allowing for freedom of movement while minimizing water flushing.
