Märkäkemikaali is a Finnish term that translates to "wet chemical" in English. It is often used in contrast to dry chemicals, particularly in the context of fire suppression systems. Wet chemical systems are specifically designed to extinguish fires involving cooking oils and fats, such as those found in commercial kitchens. These systems utilize a unique extinguishing agent that reacts with burning fats to create a foam blanket, which cools the burning material and prevents reignition.

The extinguishing agent commonly used in wet chemical systems is typically an aqueous solution of potassium acetate, potassium carbonate, or potassium citrate. When this solution comes into contact with hot burning oil or fat, it undergoes a saponification process.
