Männänlähtöön is a Finnish term that translates to "piston departure" or "piston escape" in English. It refers to a specific failure mode in internal combustion engines where the piston breaks free from its connecting rod. This catastrophic event typically occurs at high engine speeds or under excessive load, leading to severe damage to the engine.

The primary cause of männänlähtöön is often a fracture in the connecting rod itself. This fracture can be due to metal fatigue, manufacturing defects, or excessive stress placed upon the rod. When the connecting rod fails, it can no longer hold the piston in place. The piston can then be propelled upwards with great force, potentially impacting the cylinder head, or it can be ejected from the cylinder altogether.

Symptoms of an impending or occurring männänlähtöön can include a sudden and loud knocking sound from the engine, a significant loss of power, and potentially oil or smoke exiting the engine block. This type of failure is almost always terminal for the engine, requiring extensive repairs or complete replacement.
