Muuntajahäviöt, also known as transformer losses, refer to the energy dissipation that occurs in transformer cores during the switching of electric power. This phenomenon is a result of the magnetic properties of the core material and the alternating current (AC) power supply. When the transformer is switched on or off, or when the load changes, the magnetic flux in the core reverses direction. This reversal causes eddy currents to flow within the core material, leading to heat generation and energy loss.

The magnitude of muuntajahäviöt depends on several factors, including the core material, the frequency of the AC supply, and the rate of change of the magnetic flux. Common core materials such as silicon steel and amorphous metals are designed to minimize these losses, but they are inevitable in all transformers. The losses can be categorized into two main types: hysteresis losses and eddy current losses.

Hysteresis losses occur due to the resistance of the magnetic domains in the core material to changing magnetic fields. This resistance causes the magnetic flux to lag behind the applied magnetic field, resulting in energy dissipation. Eddy current losses, on the other hand, are caused by the induction of electric currents within the core material due to the changing magnetic flux. These induced currents flow in closed loops within the core material, creating resistance and heat.

Muuntajahäviöt are an important consideration in the design and operation of transformers, as they can affect efficiency, heat management, and overall performance. Various techniques and materials are employed to minimize these losses, such as using lamination to reduce eddy currents and developing core materials with lower hysteresis losses. Despite these efforts, muuntajahäviöt remain a fundamental aspect of transformer operation and cannot be entirely eliminated.
