Muunkielinen is a Finnish adjective meaning “monkish” or “monastic.” The term is derived from muunkieli, literally “monk’s language,” which historically referred to the specialized, often Latinized, speech used by monks in medieval Europe. In the Finnish context the word is applied both literally and figuratively.

In historical studies of Finland and the broader Nordic region the term muunkielinen describes the archetypal, conservative style of speech employed by clergy in ecclesiastical documents, legal charters, and liturgical texts.
