Biological agents can also act as mutagens. Certain viruses can integrate their genetic material into the host's genome, potentially disrupting gene function or causing rearrangements. Some bacteria produce toxins that can damage DNA.

Mutations induced by mutagens can have a wide range of effects. They can be silent, meaning they do not alter the amino acid sequence of a protein, or they can lead to changes in protein function, ranging from minor alterations to complete loss of function. If mutations occur in germ cells (sperm or egg cells), they can be passed on to offspring, potentially contributing to genetic disorders or evolution.
