Unlike traditional backlit LCD or OLED screens, mustenäytöt are reflective, meaning they use ambient light to illuminate the display. This characteristic makes them highly readable in direct sunlight, similar to how a physical book is easy to read outdoors.

The core technology behind mustenäytöt involves tiny black and white particles suspended in a clear fluid within microcapsules. Applying an electric charge causes these particles to move to the surface, forming images or text. When the charge is removed, the particles remain in place, creating a stable, bistable image that consumes very little power to maintain. This low power consumption is a key advantage, allowing devices like e-readers to operate for weeks on a single charge.

Mustenäytöt are primarily used in electronic reading devices, such as Amazon Kindle and Kobo e-readers, due to their paper-like appearance and excellent battery life. They are also found in some electronic shelf labels in retail stores, digital signage, and smartwatches where power efficiency and outdoor readability are paramount. The technology offers a distinct viewing experience, free from the eye strain often associated with prolonged exposure to backlit screens.
