Musklatur, also known as the muscular system, refers to the collection of muscles in an organism's body. These muscles are responsible for various bodily functions, including movement, maintaining posture, and generating heat. There are three main types of muscle tissue in the human body: skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.

Skeletal muscles are voluntary muscles, meaning they are controlled consciously. They are attached to bones by tendons and are responsible for locomotion and other movements. Skeletal muscle tissue appears striated under a microscope due to the arrangement of its contractile proteins.

Smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped and lack striations.

Cardiac muscle is found exclusively in the heart. It is also involuntary and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. Cardiac muscle cells are striated and branched, connected by intercalated discs that allow for synchronized contractions.

The contraction of muscles is a complex process involving the interaction of protein filaments, primarily actin and myosin, with the use of energy in the form of ATP. The nervous system plays a crucial role in initiating and controlling muscle contractions, sending signals that trigger these physiological events. The collective function of the musklatur is essential for survival, enabling everything from breathing and circulation to walking and gesturing.
