Murskeet, also known as the Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), is a medium-sized, secretive heron species found in wetlands across Europe and Asia. It is known for its distinctive, explosive call, which is often heard during the breeding season, particularly at dawn and dusk. The call, which sounds like a loud, booming "ker-reek," gives the bird its common name in many languages, including "murskeet" in Dutch.

The Eurasian Bittern is well-camouflaged, with a mottled brown and buff plumage that allows it to blend seamlessly into the reeds and vegetation of its habitat. This camouflage, combined with its secretive nature, makes it challenging to spot. The bird's plumage also features a distinctive, streaked pattern on its neck and breast, and it has a long, pointed beak designed for catching fish and other aquatic prey.

Murskeet primarily inhabit reed beds, marshes, and other wetland areas. They are solitary birds, except during the breeding season, when they form loose colonies. The female typically lays a clutch of 3-5 eggs in a well-hidden nest built among the reeds. Both parents share incubation duties, which last around 24-26 days.

The Eurasian Bittern is a migratory bird, with northern populations wintering in the warmer regions of southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. During migration and in their wintering grounds, they can be found in a variety of wetland habitats, including rice fields and mangroves.

Conservation efforts have been implemented in many areas to protect the Eurasian Bittern's habitat, as wetland drainage and destruction have led to population declines. Despite these challenges, the species remains relatively widespread, and its conservation status is currently listed as "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
