Muovifilamentin, commonly referred to as plastic filament, is the raw material used in fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. It consists of a thermoplastic polymer extruded into a long, thin strand of a specific diameter, typically 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm. This filament is wound onto a spool and fed into the hot end of a 3D printer, where it is heated to its melting point and extruded layer by layer to build a three-dimensional object.

A wide variety of plastic materials are used to create filament, each with unique properties that influence the strength, flexibility, temperature resistance, and appearance of the printed object. Popular filament types include Polylactic Acid (PLA), which is biodegradable and easy to print, making it suitable for beginners and general-purpose applications. Other common materials include PETG, which offers a good balance of strength and ease of printing, and Nylon, valued for its toughness and flexibility. Specialty filaments incorporating wood, metal, or carbon fiber are also available to achieve unique aesthetic or mechanical properties.
