Munkamemóriának, often translated as working memory, is a cognitive system responsible for temporarily storing and manipulating information necessary for complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension. It is distinct from long-term memory, which stores information for extended periods. Working memory is thought to have a limited capacity and duration, meaning it can only hold a small amount of information for a short time.

The concept of working memory has evolved from earlier models of short-term memory. Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch proposed a multicomponent model in 1974, which has since become widely influential. This model typically includes a central executive, which controls attention and coordinates the other components, and several subordinate systems. These subordinate systems are often described as the phonological loop, responsible for verbal information, and the visuospatial sketchpad, which handles visual and spatial information. More recent extensions to the model have added the episodic buffer, which integrates information from different sources into a coherent episode.

Working memory plays a crucial role in many everyday activities. For instance, when reading a sentence, working memory holds the initial words while processing the later ones to understand the complete meaning. Similarly, when performing mental arithmetic, working memory keeps track of numbers and intermediate calculations. Deficits in working memory are associated with various cognitive impairments and developmental disorders, highlighting its fundamental importance in cognitive function. Research continues to explore the neural mechanisms underlying working memory and its involvement in different cognitive processes.
